On June 8, 2022, New York University’s Board of Trustees approved the termination for cause of Chuanshu Huang, MD, PhD, a tenured faculty member in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Departments of Environmental Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, and Urology.
Dr. Huang, who was awarded tenure at the Grossman School of Medicine in 2004, had been a principal investigator overseeing National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants totaling approximately $18 million. In December 2018, the NIH notified the School of suspected irregular and undisclosed research activity by Dr. Huang that violated NIH disclosure policies regarding foreign research support. The School conducted an 18-month internal investigation which revealed that, since approximately 2010, Dr. Huang had failed to disclose that he acted as a principal investigator and co-principal investigator on outside research activities on behalf of Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) in Wenzhou, China, in violation of the School’s and University’s conflict of interest and conflict of commitment policies requiring disclosure of any outside research support and activity, or affiliation with a foreign research institution. The investigation also revealed that Dr. Huang had caused the School to make false certifications to the NIH regarding his affiliation with WMU and China’s Thousand Talents Plan, a talent recruitment program funded by the Chinese government to attract internationally trained top-tier scientists to help fuel China’s competitive advantage in scientific research and technological innovation.
