Results: Compared to healthy volunteers, COVID-19 patients showed significant reduction in BV5 (pulmonary blood volume contained in blood vessels of <5 mm2) expressed as BV5/(total pulmonary blood volume; p < 0.0001), and significant increases in BV5-10 and BV 10 (pulmonary blood volumes contained in vessels between 5 and 10 mm2 and above 10 mm2, respectively, p < 0.0001). These changes were consistent across lobes.
Conclusion: COVID-19 patients display striking anomalies in the distribution of blood volume within the pulmonary vascular tree, consistent with increased pulmonary vasculature resistance in the pulmonary vessels below the resolution of CT.

Although COVID-19 is most well known for causing substantial respiratory pathology, it can also result in several extrapulmonary manifestations. These conditions include thrombotic complications, myocardial dysfunction and arrhythmia, acute coronary syndromes, acute kidney injury, gastrointestinal symptoms, hepatocellular injury, hyperglycemia and ketosis, neurologic illnesses, ocular symptoms, and dermatologic complications. Given that ACE2, the entry receptor for the causative coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, is expressed in multiple extrapulmonary tissues, direct viral tissue damage is a plausible mechanism of injury. In addition, endothelial damage and thromboinflammation, dysregulation of immune responses, and maladaptation of ACE2-related pathways might all contribute to these extrapulmonary manifestations of COVID-19. Here we review the extrapulmonary organ-specific pathophysiology, presentations and management considerations for patients with COVID-19 to aid clinicians and scientists in recognizing and monitoring the spectrum of manifestations, and in developing research priorities and therapeutic strategies for all organ systems involved.

A whistleblower who previously worked at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Georgia detailed a high rate of hysterectomies and alleged medical neglect in a complaint filed to the Department of Homeland Security inspector general Monday.
Dawn Wooten, a licensed practical nurse employed by the center who's represented by the Government Accountability Project and Project South, stated in a complaint that while some women may have required a hysterectomy, "everybody's uterus cannot be that bad."
The Government Accountability Project provides representation for whistleblowers and Project South is a social justice organization. The complaint is also signed by several immigrant advocacy organizations: Georgia Detention Watch, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights and South Georgia Immigrant Support Network.
The complaint, which also included a series of concerns about the facility's handling of the coronavirus, immediately received responses from Democratic lawmakers.

This is a video that has been going around since Thursday. It features a sheriff's deputy in Clackamas County, Oregon — where many rightwing militia members attempted to set up illegal "checkpoints" at which they held journalists at gunpoint, due to the imaginary threat of "antifa" activists either setting fires or looting houses — chatting up militia members about how he needs the public's help to deal with "antifa motherfuckers," and generally encouraging what they were doing and giving them advice on how to avoid running afoul of the law.
That would be bad enough. In fact, it was bad enough that Mark Nikolai, the deputy offering this advice, was placed on "leave." Sheriff's departments all over the west have had to issue statements explaining that no, the fires are not being set by antifa activists. This has been deeply disappointing news to rightwing zealots who were really hoping for a scenario in which they could murder some liberals and still not be the bad guys.
But it is much, much worse than just spreading terrible rumors. Because at about 1:14 in this other video below, Nikolai also tells the militia members that if they kill someone, they should leave a knife on the body in order to give themselves a way to claim self-defense.

South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg released a statement to media late Monday with his account of the Saturday night car accident in which he apparently struck and killed a man.
In the statement, Ravnsborg said that after he crashed he called 911 to report an animal strike. Hyde County Sheriff Mike Volek responded.
Ravnsborg said he searched a ditch with his cell phone flashlight, with help from Volek, for what Ravnsborg believed was the body of a large animal — a deer perhaps — and found nothing.
What the two South Dakota state officials both missed was the body of Joseph Boever, a 55-year-old Highmore, SD man who Ravnsborg apparently struck, the state Public Safety Department confirmed to NBC News on Monday.
